The Writing Canvas
Draft scenes, outlines, and beats in a focused rich-text editor with your AI partner alongside.
The Writing Canvas is the center of WritersRoom — a focused, distraction-free editor where you actually write. Instead of keeping your script in a separate app, you draft scenes, outlines, beat sheets, and series-bible pages directly inside your project, with all of your memory, files, and AI context one panel away.
Every document you create is saved to your project and counts toward your GreenLight readiness. The canvas autosaves as you type, with save status shown in the header; check that changes are saved before closing or leaving the page.
Document types you can create
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Scene | A single screenplay scene with headings, action, and dialogue |
| Episode Outline | Beat-by-beat structure for an episode or act |
| Beat Sheet | High-level story beats and turning points |
| Series Bible | World rules, tone, and long-arc planning |
| Character Notes | Backstory, voice, and motivation for a character |
| Pitch One-Pager | A tight logline-to-hook summary for buyers |
Working in the canvas
Create a document
Use the Document Navigator on the left (the Docs tab) to add a new document. Give it a title and pick a type. You can rename it or change its type any time from the canvas header.
Write with structure
Type your draft directly. Use the slash menu (type /) to insert screenplay blocks — scene heading, action, dialogue, beat, or note — without reaching for the mouse.
Ask AI in context
Select any text and use the AI Edit-in-Place toolbar, or open the AI Companion on the right. Because relevant project memory and available voice context can be included, the feedback sounds like your writing partner — not a generic chatbot.
Let it autosave
The canvas saves automatically a few seconds after you stop typing. The header shows the save status and a live word count so you always know where you stand.
AI Edit-in-Place
Select any passage in the canvas and a floating toolbar appears with one-tap AI edits — Rewrite in Project Voice, Dialogue Pass, Compress, Expand, Fix Continuity, Make More Cinematic, or a Custom Prompt. See the dedicated AI Edit-in-Place article for the full workflow.
On phones, the canvas lives under the Write tab and opens by default. Your documents, AI companion, and project memory are all reachable from the tab strip at the top. AI Edit proposals slide up as a bottom sheet so they're just as easy to review on a phone.
